Hello

I’m a self-taught contemporary abstract artist creating vibrant mixed media paintings and altered cyanotypes—a unique camera-less photographic process. Rooted in collaboration with nature, my work radiates energy, fluid motion, and luminous depth.

I’m drawn to quiet and serenity—it’s within that stillness that I give each artwork the thoughtful attention it deserves.

Texture and Flow:

I’m inspired by the flow of pigment, the richness of layered textures, and the meditative power of brushstrokes. My influences are many, but lately they include Asian water-ink traditions and the Japanese art of kintsugi, which celebrates the beauty within broken, imperfect and organic forms. You’ll often find delicate gold leaf or hand-drawn gold lines in my work—a quiet nod to this philosophy.

Lately, I’ve been exploring the interactions of paint on raw canvas and experimenting with abstract expressionist techniques like Helen Frankenthaler's soak stain method. I strive for the disciplined elegance of simplicity in my compositions, and find that achieving it is a slow, immersive process that deepens my connection to each piece.

In my more textured work, I also incorporate collage elements from my travels throughout the world—cultural ephemera that connect the artwork to the world outside its frame.

Cyanotypes

yanotype is a cameraless photographic process invented over 250 years ago by the British astronomer Sir John Herschel. Created on watercolor paper, organic linen and silk, my altered cyanotypes are a collaboration with nature: sunlight-activated photographic prints created from native plants and marine life. I then enhance them with chemistry drawn from both my studio and the sea. I add color and depth to these pieces by incorporating watercolors, pastels and reflective elements into the artwork, which often has multiple layers. Each piece is entirely unique—shaped by the sun’s rays and the natural chemistry of organic components—resulting in abstract works of art that even I can’t fully predict.

Recurring themes in my work—mist, glow, translucence, and layered light—echo my love for nature and the quiet awe it inspires.

I'm so glad you are here and hope that you love experiencing my art as much as I love creating it!

Starfish in hand

I often used materials from the sea in my cyanotype art.

Susanne on the beach

I find endless inspiration and art materials out here on the sand!

Exposing plants for the print

Native plants from coastal South Carolina being exposed in UV light

Rinsing cyanotype

After exposure, I rinse the chemistry from the print and allow it to fully dry.

Altered cyanotype - green blue abstract

A framed cyanotype after it has been exposed, rinsed, dried and matted.

Framed cyanotype of common elephant's foot

Elephant's foot is a native plant near my beach home - I love the tones of turquoise and sepia & never can know for sure what the final result will be! Each piece is utterly unique.
